Dental Extractions

A dental extraction or tooth extraction is simply the removal of a tooth; either due to tooth decay or damage. There is also the possibility that a tooth would need to be removed in order to make space for orthodontic work.

What are Dental Extractions?

Dental extraction is a tooth removal procedure that is performed in office by Dr. Kim. There are two procedures that can be performed: simple and surgical. Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are exposed using a local anesthetic. A surgical extraction is a tooth removal that is performed on an impacted tooth that has yet to surface above the gum line. This type is slightly more complicated and a patient can find it more comfortable under general anesthesia.  Options for general anesthesia can be provided-just ask.

You May Need Dental Extractions If:

  • You have an abscessed tooth
  • Tooth decay infection
  • Progressive gum disease
  • Your teeth are crowded

What to Expect During Dental Extractions

The First Appointment

The first step is paying Dr. Kim a visit for an evaluation. At this appointment, he will examine the tooth you are concerned about as well as the surrounding teeth and decide what method he will need to use to remove it. The extraction will most likely happen at a subsequent appointment unless it has been deemed an emergency by Dr. Kim.

The Second Appointment

If the tooth is exposed, Dr. Kim will inject the area with a local anesthetic to numb the area for your comfort. Once the numbing has taken effect, Dr. Kim will be able to remove your tooth. If the tooth is impacted, Dr. Kim will have to remove the gum and bone tissue covering the impacted tooth and gently remove the tooth with forceps.
