Dental Implants

If you’re missing a permanent tooth due to an injury or oral condition, Dr. Kim may recommend dental implants for patients who only have one gap within a row of teeth.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are used to replace individual teeth that have been lost due to either trauma, decay, or gum disease. This is an effective alternative to dentures or bridges in the event a patient is only missing one tooth. Dental implants are intended to replace the root of the tooth for new replacement teeth to be attached to. These foundations are placed to firmly hold new teeth that are designed to resemble your own teeth for a seamless result.

You May Need Dental Implants If:

  • You have tooth decay – Tooth decay can be caused by poor dental hygiene, in which a tooth has been neglected to the point where the root is damaged or an infection has formed in the tissues around it.
  • You experienced trauma to a tooth – If you have lost a tooth due to a traumatic blow or direct impact to the area, an implant can be used to act as the root and tooth that has been knocked out.
  • Gum disease – When a patient has gum disease that has progressed to a certain level, the surrounding tissues can become infected, spreading to the teeth and affecting the roots.

What to Expect During Dental Implant Application

The First Appointment

The first step in dental implant installation is seeing Dr. Kim for a consultation. Dr. Kim will develop an individualized treatment plan based on your current condition and lifestyle. Dr. Kim has specialized training in both oral surgery and cosmetic dentistry, making the whole process smoother from start to finish. By using Healthy Living Dentistry as your practice of choice, there is no need to worry about coordinating between your regular dentist and your practitioner placing your dental implants. At this appointment, Dr. Kim will review your options with you and plans for the implant will be made.

Your Second Appointment

At your second appointment, Dr. Kim will be ready to install your dental implant. Once your mouth has been prepared, the tooth “root” portion of the implant (a small titanium post), is inserted into the opening of the missing tooth.  Over time, the jawbone will heal and grow around the metal post for a secure fit in the jaw bone. The complete healing process can range from six to twelve weeks.

Once the implant has properly bonded to the jawbone, a small connecting piece is attached to the original metal post in order to attach the new artificial tooth. In order to make your new tooth match the rest, Dr. Kim will take impressions of your teeth and also create a model of your bite. The dental implant will be based on this model. A crown or replacement tooth is then fixed into the root. Since the implant is securely fixed to the jawbone, the dental implant looks and functions just like your own natural teeth.

If you have a missing tooth and are in search of a comfortable and functional replacement, dental implants may be right for you. Contact Healthy Living Dentistry today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kim.
