You might think brushing and flossing your teeth at home is enough, however, a regular professional teeth cleaning is an essential part of your dental health. At Healthy Living Dentistry, we want to ensure that your teeth cleaning experience is a simple and painless one!
A professional teeth cleaning is done by a hygienist at the dentist’s office. A teeth cleaning can remove the buildup of harmful tartar and plaque on and between the teeth. When plaque hardens and turns into calculus, more commonly known as tartar, it can only be removed with a professional teeth cleaning. Plaque that is left on the teeth can lead to other problems such as bad breath, gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. Signs of dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer can also be detected during your regular teeth cleaning.
Your teeth cleaning appointment will begin with going over your dental and medical history and any concerns you might have. You might have X-rays taken to show tooth and jaw health that isn’t visible to the naked eye. Dr. Kim will also check the mouth for signs of oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, and cracks in crowns or fillings.
During the actual cleaning, instruments are used to remove tartar and plaque around the gum line and in between the teeth. So, don’t worry if you hear scraping; that’s just the sound of your teeth becoming cleaner and healthier! A gritty toothpaste and electric brush are then used to remove any leftover tartar. Finally, your teeth will be flossed to help remove leftover tartar from between the teeth.
A fluoride treatment is often used to protect the teeth and help fight cavities. A mouthpiece is filled with one of many fun flavors and left over the teeth for one minute.
When your teeth are all clean, Dr. Kim will go over any dental problems they observed and will educate you on proper teeth brushing and flossing. Remember that a professional cleaning does not replace important at home dental hygiene habits. Don’t forget to schedule your next dental cleaning in another six months!
