Dental x-ray frequency depends on your age, oral health history, and risk level. There is no single schedule that applies to everyone. Your dentist at Healthy Living Dentistry in Foothill Ranch, CA, recommends a schedule based on your specific situation.
X-Ray Frequency for Adults
Most adults with good oral health and no history of frequent decay need x-rays every 12 to 36 months. Your dentist uses your dental history and the findings from your clinical exam to determine where in that range you fall.
Higher Risk Adult Patients
Some patients need x-rays more often. If you have a history of frequent cavities, gum disease, or complex restorations, you may need dental x-rays every 6 to 18 months. Dry mouth, a high-sugar diet, and certain medications can also increase your cavity risk and affect how often we recommend imaging.
Why Skipping X-Rays Is Risky
Dental x-rays for early detection exist for a reason. Decay between teeth, bone loss, and developing infections have no visible symptoms in their early stages. A clinical exam alone cannot find them. By the time these problems cause you pain or become visible, they usually require more involved treatment.
New Patients
If you are new to Healthy Living Dentistry, we typically recommend a full set of x-rays taken at your first visit to establish a baseline for your care.
